R.Siméon distingue deux espèces: Inga circinalis ou Mimosa circinalis. Arbre qui donne une gomme employée en médecine et dans l'industrie principalement pour la teinture (mezquite). Prosopis dulcis. Arbuste très commun au Mexique et dont le fruit est un aliment ordinaire.
Prosopis juliflora, est l'un des représentant les plus caractéristique de la flore arbustive des steppes du nord du Mexique. Le 'mesquite" produit de larges gousses renfermant des graines comestibles. Duverger, L'origine des Aztèques, p.173.
